Overview
The Rongai route ascends Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side of the mountain, along the border between Tanzania and Kenya.
This route offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by approaching it from the north. It is one of the quietest routes on the mountain and is known for its true wilderness feel. The trek begins near the Kenyan border and passes through diverse landscapes, offering spectacular views of the Mawenzi spires and the vast plains below.
The Rongai route is ideal for those seeking a more remote experience and a gentler ascent during the first few days, though the summit day remains a significant challenge.

6-Day Itinerary
Register at the gate and begin your hike through maize fields and pine forest. The trail climbs gently to the first night's camp at First Cave.
The trail continues towards Kibo, passing Second Cave (3450m) and reaching Kikelwa Cave. Enjoy expanding views of the mountain.
A short but steep climb up grassy slopes offers superb wilderness views. Camp is spectacularly situated beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi.
Cross the lunar landscape of the "Saddle" between Mawenzi and Kibo. Rest at Kibo Hut in preparation for the midnight summit push.
Midnight start for the final push via Gillman's Point. After reaching Uhuru Peak, descend to Horombo Hut for the final night.
Descend through the forest to Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificates before transferring back to Moshi for a well-earned shower.
