Mikumi National Park 2 Days

An immersive overnight safari experience in the heart of the southern circuit

Overview

Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s 4th largest national park and the most convenient safari destination from Dar es Salaam.

Set along the A7 highway, it’s the only park where you can leave the city after breakfast and be watching lions before lunch. The heart of Mikumi is the Mkata Floodplain, often called ‘Little Serengeti’ for its sweeping grasslands and exceptional wildlife density.

This 2-day safari allows you to experience the park's magic at both sunrise and sunset, providing the best opportunities to spot the "Big 4" (lion, elephant, buffalo, and leopard) and many other species. Stay overnight at a lodge inside or near the park to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness.

Tour Highlights

  • Extended game drives in Mkata Floodplain
  • Sunset and sunrise wildlife viewing
  • Overnight stay at Vuma Hills or similar
  • Spot lions, leopards, and large elephant herds
  • Visit the hippo pool for close encounters
  • Professional English-speaking safari guide

Early morning game drive after breakfast. The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain draw frequent comparisons to the Serengeti. Spot lions, elands, hartebeests, buffaloes, zebras, and giraffes. After a picnic lunch, drive back to Dar es Salaam for late evening drop-off.

Mikumi Safari FAQs

The dry season (June to October) is best for predator action as animals gather around water sources. The wet season (November to May) offers lush green scenery and is great for bird watching.

Mikumi is home to lions, elephants, buffaloes, and leopards (the "Big 4"). Rhinos are not present in the park, but the abundance of other wildlife more than makes up for it.
