Overview
Mount Meru, standing at 4,566m, is a spectacular freestanding volcano located in Arusha National Park.
It is the second highest mountain in Tanzania and offers a superb four-day trek to the summit. The mountain last erupted in 1910 and is classified as an active volcano. The trek passes through diverse ecosystems, from lush forests where you might spot giraffes, buffaloes, and colobus monkeys, to the barren, lunar-like landscape of the crater rim. An armed ranger often accompanies trekkers due to the presence of wildlife.
Mount Meru is frequently used as a warm-up and acclimatization climb for Mount Kilimanjaro, but it is a magnificent and challenging adventure in its own right.
